Why has the word "occult" come to mean something negative when referring to religion?
Q. The word occult actually just means hidden... However, I have spoken with so many people, and read so many books/articles, that use it in a negative way to describe Wicca, as well as other religions. I am mainly just curious what people's thoughts are on the subject. For a little background on me. I do not practice Wicca, though I am learning about it. I don't consider myself to be Christian, either. I am still trying to find my path.

A. You'd be amazed at all the words that suddenly became "negative" when Christianity came about. Did you know the words Daemon and Daimon (the two words that became Demon) used to mean Divine Intelligence and Replete with Wisdom? Now, Demon means Devil. Interesting, eh? Even though the original root words meant nothing of the sort. It's kind of like how "Liberal" has become a bad word in our modern day.

What are some signs that someone is engaging in the occult and why are those signs indicators?
Q. I was told that even little things like certain video games are occult and if you dress your dog in black and red booties (my dog lost two black ones and two red ones from each set, so now he has to wear two black and two red) that also is an indicator. I don't understand why.
Asked by Catharyn - Wed Mar 4 18:43:51 2009 - - 12 Answers - 0 Comments

A. "dress your dog in black and red booties" Seriously? I chocked on my coffee for that one lol Define "occult" Is it practicing the Craft? Being pagan per se? Being psychic Or are you referring to just Satanism? If in general, I'm Pagan -Neo-Shaman. I'm also a traditional witch. I don't go around wearing odd jewelry, don't have tattoos. I've been known to dress my yorkie and do her hair :P (won't try that with my Great Dane or Spaniel and certainly not my persian cats) Other than that, I don't think you could find out by simply looking at me..I don't think ;) (though many have mentioned something about my eyes)

A. My knowledge of New York geography is a little rusty, so all of these may be a bit of a trek for you. But I hope this list will be helpful. Also, if going to a physical store becomes too much of a chore, you could also explore online shops.

Is the "left-hand path" always associated with the occult and Satanism?
Q. I like the values of the left-hand path. However, every time I look it up, it's always associated with the occult or Satanism whether it's LaVeyan or theistic. Is it only associated with these things?
Asked by Spiral - Thu Oct 9 18:53:13 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Not as far as I'm concerned. I'm a Pagan and I incorporate some elements that some would see as left-hand path into my own spirituality. Most Pagans these days are hung up on the whole "harm none" thing, too blind to realize that being a Pagan is about balance, and sometimes we must restore the balance to our lives. Those who condemn others for not adhering to "harm none" are every bit as narrow-minded as the Christians who tell everyone they are going to hell. Perhaps a little research as to the origin and the actual age of this tenet would prove that this is certainly not an "ancient" Pagan belief.

Sagittarius points his arrow to it. The 13th house is not so long in duration as the main 12. It is Loki the trickster, who does some terrible deed which then actually turns out for the good, as represented by the Phoenix of rising from the ashes of disaster. :) It signifies its evolution time. :) Practicing Shaman... quantum physics rocks

A. Well, you could always look into Anthropology, and then go into Cultural Anthropology, and then from there specialize in ritualistic anthropology. I'm sure most junior colleges offer some sort of paranormal (at least, they do where I live) class(es). Also, most churches have some sort of paranormal team. If not, they should know a church with similar beliefs that do. You can look into those as well.

A. "Occult" adj (fm L "occultus", pp of "occulere" = "to cover up") not revealed, secret; used with "the" matters regarded as involving the action of supernatural agencies or some secret knowledge of them. Sometimes I truly miss the days when people understood the concept of established lexicography. I generally regard supposedly "supernatural" phenomena as just being things we cannot yet explain, and "magic" as science or technology we do not yet understand.

Asked by RainFlower - Wed Jun 18 12:09:58 2008 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Most Pagan shops go broke or just barely keep their heads above water. The people I know make most of their money renting out space in their shop for local covens to have events and teachers to have classes. The fact is, many Pagans make their own tools and Amazon.com has made buying books in person obsolete. I will echo what's already been said about doing an online shop. The Pagan/Occult merchants that I know that do best sell at least partially online. (and those who have both brick and mortar and online shops tell me most of their sales are online) The one merchant I know who is doing really well sells exclusively online. Less overhead that way. What I would do in your shoes is turn your inherited property into a Pagan retreat center.… [cont.]

It is wrong for me to be fascinated by the occult?
Q. I am confused right now about this... I was raised a Catholic but I have always questioned things. Then I came across some occult topics and became fascinated. I bought some tarot cards because they intrigued me. I asked my parents about some of this stuff and they said it was evil. Is it wrong then for me to like these things? Is it 'sinful'? How is it evil? How can you be sure evil spirits are the ones talking to us via the Ouija Boards?
Asked by Miss Complicated - Mon Aug 10 16:30:37 2009 - - 37 Answers - 0 Comments

A. There is no single answer to that, certainly such activities are forbidden by the Catholic Church but it is up to you to decide the that faith is actually right for you. It's my belief that there is no single spiritual path that applies to everyone and that we must all find the one that works for us as individuals, so you might want to consider looking into not just the occult but also other faiths. That said, I would like to point out that neither the Tarot nor the Ouija were invented as occult tools. The Tarot was simply a specialized playing card deck used for certain Eastern European games that required an extra suit, they weren't used for divination until the second half of the 19th century, and then primarily in areas like France… [cont.]
